MPharm Pharmacy

The MPharm Pharmacy at the University of Sunderland is designed to prepare students for a professional career as pharmacists. The course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which allows graduates to register as qualified pharmacists in the UK upon completing the degree.

This programme combines scientific study with professional practice to build a deep understanding of how medicines are developed, how they act within the body, and how they are used to treat various health conditions. Students will gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training that directly relate to real-world pharmacy practice.

Much of the learning experience is practical, taking place in modern laboratories and simulated pharmacy environments. Students also participate in placements across healthcare settings, including hospitals and community pharmacies. These experiences help students develop professional confidence and learn how to effectively collaborate with patients and healthcare teams.

Applicants must submit a personal statement describing their motivation for studying pharmacy and a reference from a teacher or employer. If you have relevant experience in healthcare or volunteering, include a CV to strengthen your application.

Grade Requirements:

• 120–128 UCAS tariff points, typically from A-levels (ABB, including Chemistry and one other science subject such as Biology, Physics, or Mathematics).
• BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science with a DDM profile, including strong science-related content.
• GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade 5/B or above.
• Equivalent international qualifications are accepted; applicants should contact the university for country-specific requirements.

English Proficiency:

• IELTS overall score of 6.0, with no component below 5.5.
• Equivalent qualifications such as TOEFL or Pearson PTE are accepted; applicants should review the university’s website for details.

The tuition fee for international students enrolled in the MPharm Pharmacy programme is £20,000 per academic year.

Sunderland offers financial support, particularly for international students, such as the International Scholarship, which can reduce fees by up to £4,000.
