PhD Biomedical Engineering

University of Dundee

Course overview

The PhD Biomedical Engineering at the University of Dundee is a four-year research degree that places students with leading experts in both engineering and clinical science. The goal is to develop solutions for urgent real-world needs, with much of the work done in partnership with the School of Medicine at Ninewells Hospital. Research spans areas like instrumentation development and applications to patients.

The first year is structured as a graduate school, offering courses and research rotations to suit the student's background. This allows students to complete mini-projects before choosing their final full-time research project for years two to four. This programme helps students develop strong practical and analytical skills, preparing them for careers in both industry and academia.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • For entry to the four-year PhD programme, applicants should have a degree in an appropriate subject with the equivalent of a UK Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) classification.
  • While not mandatory, a Master's degree (MSc) from an English-speaking university is a desirable qualification.
  •  If your previous degree did not include research skills, you may be considered for the Structured PhD, which provides extra research training.

  • They must score at least 6.0 in both the Writing and Speaking sections, and no less than 5.5 in the Reading and Listening sections.
