MSci Nursing Mental Health and Leadership
Course overview
The MSci Nursing (Mental Health) and Leadership programme at the University of Derby is a four-year full-time course. It combines nursing training for the mental health field with leadership education. Students will learn how to support people with mental health needs in a range of settings. On successful completion, students are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as mental health nurses and are prepared to take on roles that require leadership and decision-making.
During the four years, the programme is structured to grow both clinical and leadership expertise. In the earlier years, students build foundations in anatomy, physiology and core nursing practice. They also attend simulation labs and practice-learning placements. In later years, the focus moves to advanced practice in mental health, team leadership, and research. Students learn through lectures, seminars, labs and supervised clinical placements. Assessment methods include written exams, case studies, reflective journals, skills demonstrations, portfolio work, presentations, research projects and leadership-related assignments.
