MPharm Pharmacy with a Preparatory Foundation Year
Course overview
This five-year MPharm (Hons) programme starts with a Preparatory (Foundation) Year, which is suitable if students whose current grades do not allow for direct entry to the main four-year degree. The course integrates science and practice to train students for the new and advanced roles that pharmacists now take in modern healthcare. It builds on the strengths of the Medical School, using an approach that reflects how healthcare professionals work together.
To start the main MPharm degree, students must pass the Foundation Year with at least 60% overall, including 60% in key subjects like Foundations in Pharmacy. The degree covers seven main topics, such as Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, with extensive clinical placements and lab work to provide a clear understanding of patient care. Students' progress is checked using various methods, including written exams, coursework, practical assessments, and oral presentations.
Entry requirements
Candidates are generally required to submit a personal statement that clearly discusses their reasons for choosing the course and other relevant information regarding their previous academic history. An academic and/or employer reference is also needed to support the application. Students have the option to upload their Curriculum Vitae (CV) along with their application to demonstrate any relevant work experience or professional history.
Grade Requirements:
- The offer for acceptance onto the Foundation Year is a grade range of BBC to CCD at A level or equivalent qualifications. Candidates will be invited to an online interview, which will cover areas such as problem-solving, ethics, and numeracy skills.
- Applicants will also need to complete a Fitness to Practise self-declaration form and have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if they are offered a place.
English Proficiency:
- Applicants coming from a non-English speaking background must demonstrate their English language ability by submitting scores from an approved test.
- Candidates need to achieve an overall score of at least 6.5 in the IELTS Academic test, with minimum scores of 5.5 in each section, or submit equivalent scores from a recognised test like a SELT.
