Solent University (Southampton)

BSc Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science

Solent University (Southampton)

Course overview

This degree gets students ready for jobs in the growing health and well-being industry by teaching key subjects like nutrition, exercise science, and public health. Students can follow one of two career routes: the Fitness and Personal Training specialism or the Health and Exercise Science specialism. The programme has full approval from the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), meaning graduates earn recognised skills in areas such as Gym Instruction and Personal Training.

The learning approach includes real-world opportunities such as Solent's personal training scheme and nutrition counselling service, alongside using the CASES-accredited physiology laboratory. Assessment methods include practical activities, live client briefs, video submissions, and portfolios, rather than only written examinations. Graduates are also prepared for further academic study in fields such as physiotherapy, dietetics, and postgraduate nutrition.

Entry requirements

Applicants must submit their application through the University's main system, which will evaluate their qualifications and any prior experience. The University accepts applications from people of all ages, including older students, and can take relevant work experience into account if they do not have the usual academic entry requirements. All successful applicants must complete a mandatory criminal convictions check using the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Grade Requirements:

  • The offer for direct entry to the degree is to achieve 104–120 UCAS tariff points, usually from a minimum of two A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants are also required to have GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths, Science, and English. Alternatively, a different combination of qualifications will be acceptable if the student can demonstrate enough relevant work experience in a health, fitness, or nutrition-related sector.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants whose schooling was not conducted in English must prove their ability to use the language effectively.
  • The minimum requirement is an overall score of 6.0 in the IELTS Academic test, with no score below 5.5 in any of the four individual components, or an equivalent secured English language test (SELT) score.
  • The University offers a pre-sessional English programme for students who need additional support to meet this standard.
