BSc Forensic Chemistry
Course overview
The BSc Forensic Chemistry at Nottingham Trent University trains students in chemistry methods applied to forensic casework. It mixes chemistry theory, lab work, crime investigation and research to prepare graduates for careers in forensic science, toxicology, or analytical chemistry. Students learn how to test substances, analyse toxins, illegal drugs, chemicals and residues from crime scenes. They study core chemistry, lab skills, analytical techniques and forensic casework.
The course is offered full-time over three years, or four years with a placement (sandwich) year. It is delivered on the Clifton Campus. Students start with foundational chemistry and move into forensic modules in later years. Modules may include illegal substances analysis, toxicology, analytical chemistry, and case studies. Students are taught using lectures, lab practicals, workshops, tutorials and project work. They spend much time in labs doing chemical tests, sample preparation and instrument analysis. Assessments include written exams, lab reports, essays, project work and a final research project. Feedback is used to help students improve.
