Course Overview

The PhD in Engineering and the Built Environment at London South Bank University (LSBU) is a research course. It helps students become creative and experts in their chosen subject. Students are meant to discover new things and learn on their own, with help from their supervisors. LSBU is known as a top modern university in London for its excellent research in Engineering, including areas like buildings and architecture (based on a 2014 review).

The university has a Doctoral College that offers many higher-level study programmes, such as PhDs, special doctorates, and Master's by Research degrees, covering lots of different subjects.

LSBU is organised into three main colleges: Health and Life Sciences, Technology and Environment, and Society and Professions. These colleges have ten schools that offer a great number of courses, including the PhD in Engineering and the Built Environment.

Entry Requirements for Nepalese Students

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement where they discuss their reasons for applying for the course. A relevant academic or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs to show their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need at least a 2:1 honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent qualification from another recognised university.
  • Professional experience, publications, and written reports will also be considered.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score at least 6.5 overall in IELTS at the postgraduate level, or submit equivalent test scores.
  • A pre-offer interview with a potential supervisor (in person or by telephone) is also part of the process.

Cost of Study

For the PhD in Engineering and the Built Environment programme, the annual tuition fee is£17,600 per year.

Scholarships

London South Bank University offers PhD scholarships to help achieve its aim of improving lives and society. For the 2025/26 academic year, there are two main kinds of scholarship funding available: the LSBU Chancellor's Scholarships offer around 100 awards that cover tuition fees only for four years and the CTE PhD Studentships (from the College of Technology and Environment) are ten awards that cover three years of tuition fees and also provide a living allowance of £21,622 per year (for 2025/26, including London weighting). For the fourth year, which is for writing up a thesis, the tuition fees are still covered, but there is no living allowance.

These scholarships give students the chance to work with top researchers, get advanced academic training, and receive guidance and support. They also allow for involvement in community projects and provide access to important connections in different industries. These scholarships are for full-time study and are open to new PhD applicants from the UK, EU, and other international countries. However, current LSBU PhD students or those doing other doctoral studies at the university cannot apply. Those who receive a scholarship are expected to complete their PhD within four years.
