BSc Biochemistry with Foundation Year

Course Overview

The BSc Biochemistry with Foundation Year at Liverpool John Moores University is a four-year programme ideal for students who don’t yet meet the entry requirements for the full degree. The foundation year lays the groundwork in chemistry, biology, and study skills. After completing it, students move straight into the three-year honours degree. Works well for those who need extra support before starting degree-level study.

In Year 0 (foundation year), students take modules such as Basic Science Skills, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Introductory Chemistry, and Cell Biology. These help prepare for degree study. In Years 1 to 3, teaching covers core biochemistry subjects. Students learn how cells work, what genes do, how proteins form and act, and the chemistry behind health and disease. There are more advanced topics in later years, such as genomics, proteomics, and molecular cell biology. Students also do research through final-year projects and work placements.

Students learn through lectures, lab work, tutorials, and workshops. They work with real equipment and conduct experiments. Assessment includes written work, lab reports, exams, and a final research project. After graduation, many go on to MSc courses in fields such as industrial biotechnology, virology, immunology, or genetics, while some can choose to take industrial placements to gain experience.
