Course overview

The MSc in Structural Design and Construction Management at Kingston University is for engineers who have just completed their first degree and are starting out in construction. It is especially good for those who want to become managers in engineering and building companies. This course is formally approved by important groups like the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). This means it helps students meet the extra study needs to become a Chartered Engineer, if their first degree already had some approval.

The course brings together skills in designing structures with managing building projects. It gives a wider view of management topics and advanced engineering for structures. Students will learn how to design many types of buildings, including those that need to withstand earthquakes, using materials like steel and concrete. Students also learn about money, laws, and contracts in building, as well as management methods. Learning involves talks, lab work, group tasks, looking at real-life examples, and giving presentations, along with writing a main project about a real industry problem.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and provide other important information about their education. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to show their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants should have a good honours degree (minimum 2:2) or an equivalent qualification in civil engineering or structural engineering.
  • Candidates who do not have a degree in these specific fields but can show suitable industrial experience may also be considered. Each application is looked at individually and may ask for additional information or experience.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from backgrounds where English is not their first language need to show they can use English well. The requirement is an Academic IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with no part of the test (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) scoring below 6.0.
  • The university also accepts equivalent scores from other recognised English language tests, such as TOEFL iBT.
