BEng Civil Engineering

Course Overview

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree at Heriot-Watt prepares you to shape essential infrastructure through a well-rounded curriculum covering materials, structures, geotechnics, water and transport engineering. The early years focus on mechanics, material behaviour, mathematics, surveying and hydraulics. In later years, students move into design, project management and advanced topics such as geotechnical applications and environmental technology.

Students are assessed through a mix of examinations, coursework, lab reports, design studies and a final-year design project plus a dissertation. All teaching is enriched by cutting-edge research from the Institute of Sustainable Built Environment and input from industry professionals. The programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, enabling you to pursue Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Entry Requirements for Nepalese Students

Candidates for the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree from Heriot-Watt should submit a personal statement explaining their interest in civil engineering. An academic or employer reference is also required, with the option to include a CV to showcase work or practical experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need A Levels (BBC–ABB including Maths at B), Scottish Highers (AABB with Maths at B), International Baccalaureate (30 points with Maths at HL level 5), or BTEC (DMM in engineering with sufficient Maths).
  • Applicants with different qualifications or relevant work experience may also be considered.

English Proficiency:

  • If English is not your first language, you must achieve at least IELTS 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each section.
  •  Equivalent test scores, like PTE or TOEFL, are also accepted

Cost of Study

International students of the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree at Heriot-Watt pay a tuition fee of £25,008 annually.
