BEng Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BEng Mechanical Engineering (with Foundation Year) at the University of Central Lancashire is a four-year programme that begins with a foundation year and then moves into the honours degree. The foundation year gives students key skills in maths, physics, computing and engineering basics. After that, students study mechanical engineering topics such as mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, systems design and manufacturing. The degree emphasises design, testing and practical work in engineering labs and workshops.

This course is offered on the Preston Campus at UCLan. Students spend the first year in the foundation stage, then progress into years two, three and four of the full honours degree. Students learn by lectures, workshops, lab practicals, tutorials and project work. They will design mechanical systems, test materials, model systems with software, and work in teams. Assessments include written exams, coursework reports, lab work, design tasks, group projects and a final year project or design portfolio. The course is aligned with professional accreditation, such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and uses up-to-date engineering facilities.
