Life in Canada

To study in Canada for more than 6 months, you'll need a Study Permit. This lets you live and study in Canada, and work part-time while you learn.

While classes are in session, you can work up to 24 hours a week off-campus. During official school breaks (like winter or summer holidays), you can work full-time hours.

Study Permit — Key facts

  • Duration: Lasts as long as your school programme.
  • Work rights: Up to 24 hours a week during terms, and unlimited hours during official school breaks.
  • Eligibility: An acceptance letter from an approved school (a Designated Learning Institution), proof you have enough money for tuition and living costs, and an attestation letter from the province (if required for your course).
  • Application Cap: Canada caps new study permit applications each year to keep housing and services balanced. (Note: Master's and PhD students at public universities don't need a provincial attestation letter).

Working After Graduation

After you graduate, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to stay in Canada and work full-time. You don't need a job offer to apply, and working on a PGWP is one of the easiest ways to become a permanent resident.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — Key Facts

  • Duration: 8 months up to 3 years, depending on how long your course was (eligible Master’s graduates can get a full 3 years).
  • Work rights: You can work full-time in almost any job, for any employer.
  • Eligibility: Complete an eligible programme (at least 8 months long) at an approved Canadian school, apply within 180 days of finishing, and meet the basic language score.
  • Pathway to living in Canada: Work experience on a PGWP helps you apply for permanent residence.
