MEng Automotive Engineering

Course Overview

The MEng Automotive Engineering at Sheffield Hallam is a four-year degree that meets the requirements for Chartered Engineer status through IMechE accreditation. Students learn how to design, test, and build vehicles. The course focuses on electric, hybrid, and combustion engines, vehicle systems, aerodynamics, and sustainable manufacturing. Hands-on work is linked with theoretical study to prepare students for the industry. In early years, students build a strong foundation in design and manufacturing. They learn CAD, sustainability, materials, thermodynamics, mechanics, and electrical principles. As they advance, they use simulations to test vehicle systems.

Teaching combines lectures, lab work, problem-based learning, tutorials, simulations, and hands-on team projects. Students get support via the Engineering Café and study sessions. Challenges are shared through live projects from day one. Assessment includes coursework, exams, practical tasks, presentations, and project portfolios. Students can choose a placement year between second and third years to gain work experience; previous placements include companies like BorgWarner and Cummins. Students can join the IMechE Formula Student team to design and race a single-seater vehicle. Field trips and career fairs help build strong industry links.
