Course overview

The BEng Software Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University is a three-year full-time degree (with a four-year sandwich option including a placement year). It teaches how to design, build, and test software. Students learn to work with modern coding languages, frameworks, and tools. The course is accredited by the BCS, so graduates meet professional standards for career progression. In the first year, students cover programming, databases, and software design basics, while in later years, the topics taught include mobile apps, web services, machine learning, robotics, and AI. Assessment includes coursework, reports, presentations, and exams.

Entry requirements

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically need 72 UCAS points, such as BBC–BBB at A-level, including two science or tech subjects like maths or computing.
  • Access to HE diplomas are accepted too.

English Proficiency:

  • For applicants who do not speak English as their first language, it is necessary to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 with no skill section below 5.5.
