MBChB Medicine

Course Overview

Keele University's MBChB Medicine is a five-year degree that combines medical theory with hands-on clinical experience to help you become a compassionate and skilled doctor. This training combines scientific study with health care. You will learn about how the body works, how to identify and cure illnesses, and how to care for patients with sensitivity. From the first year on, you will learn through patient interaction, dissection, practical clinical skills, and problem-based learning. You follow a "spiral" curriculum, learning important concepts and then returning to build on them each year.

During Years 1 and 2, you will spend most of your time on the Keele campus, learning core medical science and clinical skills in small group tutorials, seminars, and anatomy laboratories. You will also acquire early exposure in community healthcare settings, such as clinics and care homes. In Years 3 to 5, your learning transfers to hospitals and clinics across Staffordshire and Shropshire, including Royal Stoke, Stafford’s County Hospital, and others. You will spend time in general practice, hospital wards and emergency departments. There is also the possibility of intercalating an additional year to get a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field. This expands your understanding and may include research or extra study in areas such as medical ethics, research methodology, or biological sciences. It provides useful tools for clinical practice.

Keele uses many teaching methods to help students learn. Students take part in small-group discussions based on patient cases, lectures, lab sessions, anatomy teaching (including dissection), tutorials, and simulated clinical experiences. They also learn alongside nursing, midwifery, and other health students to develop teamwork skills. Assessments include written exams, such as multiple choice and short answer questions, practical exams like Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), and workplace-based assessments during clinical placements.
