MA Interpreting, Technology and AI

Course Overview

This Master's course helps students become very good at all types of interpreting, including speaking after someone, speaking at the same time as someone, interpreting conversations, and interpreting remotely. It teaches students to use new technologies that use AI for speech and language, getting them ready for a changing interpreting job market. The course is based on top research about mixing professional interpreting with AI tools, and it offers paths for many languages, including Chinese.

Students will get hands-on experience by practising with specific language pairs and by acting out real-life events where many languages are spoken. There will also be talks from guest speakers. The course covers many specific areas like business, law, science, technology, and medicine. Students will learn to use digital tools and AI in their interpreting work wisely. Students can also pick extra subjects to learn about public service interpreting, translating for videos, and mixed interpreting methods.

Entry Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

Grade Requirements:

  • To enter this Master's programme, as a native English speaker, you need at least a 2:2 UK honours degree. Or an international equivalent. This degree should be in one of the languages listed below, or in a related subject where that language was the teaching language.
  • For a native speaker of one of the languages, the student needs a degree in English or a related subject. The university can also consider other subjects or relevant work experience on a case-by-case basis. The languages available in this programme are: Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish. Other languages might also be available if there is enough demand.

English Proficiency:

  • IELTS Academic (or equivalent): 6.5 overall with 6.5 in writing and speaking, and 6.0 in each other category for applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds.
  • For applicants who do not currently meet the level required for the programme, the university offers intensive pre-sessional English language courses, designed to take students to the level of English ability and skill required for their studies here.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for International students is £22,700. These fees are for the full duration of the course.
