MSc Advanced Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Placement

This 18-month, full-time course is for mechanical engineering graduates and aims to provide an in-depth understanding of advanced mechanical topics. It also gives students the necessary skills to work in the industry. The programme includes a compulsory 8 to 12-week industrial placement during the summer after the first year of classes. Students must complete both the taught modules and the industrial placement to move on to the final project.

The course curriculum combines a blend of specialised technical classes and general skills to help students become professional engineers. Students will be graded on written assignments, exams, and a final Master's project they complete in their second year. The course is also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which can help students work towards becoming Chartered Engineers.

Applicants are required to submit a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying and other relevant information. An appropriate academic or employer reference is also required. Students may also upload their CV to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements

• A first-class or second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in engineering or physical sciences, or a similar professional qualification, is normally needed.
• A different degree may be considered if the applicant has enough relevant work experience.

English Proficiency

• If English is not a first language, applicants must meet the university's English language requirement of an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with no individual component score below 6.0, or through an equivalent approved English language test such as TOEFL or PTE Academic.
• The university also offers a Pre-Masters Programme for international students who do not meet the academic entry requirements.

The tuition fee for this 18-month course for international students is £38,875. The fees are paid over two years, with the first 12 months in Year 1 and the remaining 6 months in Year 2.

A £5,000 scholarship is available for self-funded, international (non-EU) fee-paying students starting the full-time course in September 2025. This scholarship is automatically applied to their tuition fees.
