University of South Wales

Course overview

The BSc Medicinal and Biological Chemistry Sandwich at the University of South Wales is a multi-disciplinary science degree that combines chemistry, biology, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology to teach how human disease can be prevented or treated through drug design and development. The sandwich version is a four-year degree, with the third year typically a placement or work-based placement, giving students real-world experience in industries. Students study modules such as Organic Molecules: Structure, Reactivity, and Analysis; Bioinorganic Chemistry; Cellular Pathology and Disease Processes; Medicinal Drug Design; and a major research project.

Students learn and are assessed by lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical lab sessions, group work, individual projects, presentations, written coursework, laboratory work, and independent study. They learn in well-equipped instrument labs with analytical equipment, specialised labs for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, microbiology labs for handling pathogenic organisms, and the DNA/PCR labs. The sandwich placement year helps prepare students for work in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industries.
