BSc Forensic Science including Foundation Year

University of South Wales

Course overview

The BSc Forensic Science including Foundation Year at the University of South Wales is a four-year course that helps students develop investigative skills and scientific knowledge for solving crimes. If you don't have the right science background to start the degree, the Foundation Year is a great start. This year gives you the core knowledge you need in subjects like chemistry and biology to support your understanding of forensic science.

The full Forensic Science course is focused on getting you ready for a job, looking at the entire process from the crime scene to the court. You will learn standard ways to investigate crime scenes and how to analyse and understand the evidence in a lab. You will study specific types of forensic science, such as forensic chemistry, forensic biology, anthropology, fire investigation, and toxicology.

In the first year of the degree, you'll learn the basic science knowledge and the practical skills needed for forensic work. In the second year, you must choose to follow one of two main study paths: one that focuses more on chemistry or one that focuses more on biology. In the final year, you will work on a research project and a job-related skills module. Assessment uses a combination of approaches, including in-term tests, practical and laboratory skills assessments, written essay-style coursework, mock court sessions, and oral presentations.
