BEng Automotive Engineering including Foundation Year

University of South Wales

Course overview

The BEng Automotive Engineering, including a Foundation Year at the University of South Wales, provides an accessible route into automotive engineering for students whose current qualifications may not meet the direct entry requirements. The foundation year develops a strong grounding in mathematics, basic engineering principles, electrical science, and programming.

After successfully completing the foundation year, students progress to the main degree programme, where they study both mechanical and electronic aspects of modern vehicles. This includes modules in vehicle dynamics, hybrid and electric vehicle technology, embedded systems, and automotive design, all underpinned by core engineering mathematics and science.

Learning combines theoretical study with hands-on practical work, supported by access to extensive laboratory facilities such as additive manufacturing labs, wind tunnels, materials testing facilities, electronics laboratories, and a Formula Student build area. Assessment methods include laboratory work, coursework, projects, and examinations, with an optional work placement available to gain valuable industrial experience.
