BEng Civil Engineering

University of Roehampton

Course overview

This BEng Civil Engineering provides the essential knowledge and skills to design and build important structures like bridges, buildings, and transport networks. Students will learn about core areas such as structural analysis, materials, hydraulics, and geotechnical engineering, focusing on sustainable and ethical practice. The course prepares you for a successful career in the modern construction and infrastructure industries.

The learning involves formal lectures and workshops, but a lot of the course is hands-on, using specialist laboratories for practical work in concrete and soils. Students' progress is checked through a mix of practical tasks, coursework assignments (like technical reports and design projects), and written examinations across the three years of study.

Entry requirements

To apply, candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. An appropriate academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • For the standard three-year BEng course, applicants need a total of 112–128 UCAS points (or equivalent).
  • This typically means A-level grades of around BCC or BBD. Importantly, a Grade C in A-level Mathematics (or an equivalent) is needed. Alternatively, a relevant BTEC National Diploma or other qualifications are accepted.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score an overall total of 6.0 in the IELTS test.
  • They must also score no less than 5.5 in each section (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). The University also accepts equivalent official English language tests (known as SELT) that meet the same requirements.
