MSc Engineering Geology

Course Overview

The MSc Engineering Geology at the University of Portsmouth helps you develop the skills to work on important construction projects, such as tunnels, dams, offshore platforms, and wind farms. In this course, you will learn how the ground and different types of soil and rock can affect these structures. You will also learn how to study the ground carefully and make safe and effective design decisions.

Also, you will gain practical skills in site investigation, rock and soil testing, mapping, GIS, and remote sensing. A key part of the course is a field trip to Southern France, fully covered by your course fees, where you will develop your geological mapping and data collection skills.

Studying MSc Engineering Geology at the University of Portsmouth gives you the chance to carry out your research project, often in partnership with industry. All modules are core, meaning you will graduate with a strong, focused foundation for a career in engineering geology or geotechnical work. This course is also an excellent step towards becoming a Chartered Geologist.

About University

The University of Portsmouth was founded in 1870 as a school for Science and Art. It became a university in 1992 and has since then, been growing and improving. It focuses on teaching practical skills and doing research that is of benefit to the world.

The university has two main areas: the University Quarter and the Langstone Campus. The University Quarter is the bigger area, close to the Portsmouth Guildhall. Most of the classrooms and main buildings are here. The Langstone Campus has most of the university's sports facilities, including the Ravelin Sports Centre, which has won awards. Some student halls of residence are also here.

The University of Portsmouth has modern classrooms for students to learn with the newest technology. It also has special laboratories and libraries with lots of books and spaces to study.

Entry Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

Applicants with industrial and work experience will be considered.

Grade Requirements:

  • A second-class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Geology, Earth Science, Civil Engineering or a related discipline is required for this course. 

English Proficiency: 

  • Non-native speakers of English must be able to show proficiency in English by having an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each of the four components. 
  • Equivalent tests such as TOEFL and PTE Academic are also accepted. 

Cost of Study

For the 2025/2026 academic year, the tuition fee to study the MSc Engineering Geology at the University of Portsmouth is £19,200.

Scholarships

International students at the University of Portsmouth can apply for scholarships to help reduce their study costs. One example is the Chancellor’s Global Academic Merit Scholarship, which gives up to £5,000 reduction in tuition fees.

To apply, you must be an international student paying your fees (not sponsored). You also need to complete an online form to be considered. It is worth noting that this scholarship only covers one academic year.
