MBBS Medicine

University of Hull

Course overview

This is a five-year medical degree (MBBS) specifically designed to prepare students for the challenges of modern healthcare. The curriculum uses the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approach, which puts a patient-centred scenario at the heart of students' training each week. A key strength is the early and regular clinical experience that starts in the third week of the first year.

The MBBS Medicine at the University of Hull has three phases, starting from basic science and PBL in the first two years to full-time clinical placements across hospitals and GP surgeries in the region in years three and four. The final year (Phase III) prepares students for their first role as junior doctors, including a six-week elective to explore an area of medicine that interests them, potentially abroad.

Entry requirements

Candidates must submit a personal statement in which they clearly outline their reasons for applying for the course and other information in relation to their studies. A relevant academic or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs alongside their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Candidates for the standard five-year MBBS must achieve AAA at A-level. These subjects must include biology and chemistry. They also need six GCSEs at Grade 9-4 (or A*-C), including English Language and Mathematics. All applicants must sit the UCAT admissions test and perform well, as this is an important part of the selection process.

English Language Requirements:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English must achieve an IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 overall, with a minimum of 7.0 in each of the four components (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). The university may accept equivalent qualifications, but the required level of proficiency is high for this demanding clinical course.
