BSc Nursing Mental Health

University of Gloucestershire

Course overview

This BSc Nursing (Mental Health) at the University of Gloucestershire prepares students to become a registered mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme was developed in collaboration with the Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust to build experience and confidence. It places a strong emphasis on leadership skills and establishing a compassionate 'culture of care' for patients and their support networks. Students may also qualify for the NHS Learning Support Fund, which offers a non-repayable training grant of £5,000 per academic year.

The three-year course structure progresses from developing fundamental mental healthcare skills and self-management in the first year to leading and managing patient care in the second. The final year concentrates on leading and managing service, including team leadership and driving service innovation. Learning involves embedding evidence-based practice across all modules, and assessment includes written assignments, portfolios of practice, practical assessments, and a major dissertation project in the final year.
