MSc International Relations

The University of Essex offers a one-year MSc International Relations programme that uses theory to analyse global events. Rather than a purely historical approach, the course emphasises explaining and interpreting international policies, cultures, and events. Students can tailor their learning by selecting optional modules from a diverse range, including global environmental issues, European democracies, global trend forecasting, and international security and conflict resolution.

Students develop analytical skills to understand diplomacy and the roles of international organisations in global affairs. Entry Requirements

• Candidates holding a degree in a field unrelated to the program may be considered if they possess a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience, for example, working with an NGO, the United Nations, or a government body. Please submit your curriculum vitae.
  

Grade Requirements

• A 2:2 degree or international equivalent in one of the following subjects: American Studies, Economics, Finance, International Relations, Political Science, Statistics, United States Politics.

• Alternatively, a 2:2 degree in any subject which includes study in two relevant modules. Relevant modules include, but are not limited to, Comparative Political Systems, Constitutional Democracy, Contemporary World Affairs, Current Affairs, Econometrics, Game Theory, etc.

• Applicants with a lower-class degree where relevant modules have been studied with marks of 2:2 or above.

• Applicants who have achieved a first-class degree in any subject.
  

English Proficiency

• Applicants whose native language is not English are required to demonstrate English proficiency through an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in all components. Those who do not meet the specified IELTS requirements may be eligible to complete a pre-sessional English program, enabling them to commence their studies without retaking the IELTS examination.

International students for the 2025/26 academic year will be charged £22,750 for tuition.

The University of Essex offers various financial aid options for master's students, including those in the MSc International Relations programme. International students demonstrating academic excellence may be eligible for the Academic Excellence International Masters Scholarship, which can award up to £7,000. Essex graduates continuing their studies qualify for a 10% tuition fee reduction through the Alumni Loyalty Discount.
