MRes International Relations

Course Overview

The MRes International Relations at the University of Essex is a two-year research-focused programme designed to provide advanced training in research design and methods. The course prepares students for PhD study or careers requiring strong analytical skills. Unlike traditional MSc or MA programmes, this course offers in-depth methodological training alongside core international relations studies.

Students explore key topics such as Forecasting Global Trends, International Security, Conflict Analysis, Peace Studies, Political Theory, and Research Design. A major component of the MRes International Relations from the University of Essex is the 35,000-word dissertation, allowing students to develop original research in their area of interest. Entry Requirements

  • Applicants with a degree in an unrelated subject and who have at least 5 years of work experience, such as working with an NGO, UN, or government can be considered for admission. A detailed CV should be provided. 

Grade Requirements:

  • A 2:2 degree or international equivalent in subjects such as American Studies, Economics, Finance, International Relations/Studies, and other related degrees. 

English Proficiency: 

  • Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component. 

  • Candidates who do not meet the IELTS requirements may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables them to start the course without retaking IELTS.

Cost of Study

The MRes International Relations at the University of Essex costs £22,750 per year. It should be noted that fees will increase for each academic year of study.

Scholarships
