University of East London

Course overview

The PhD Psychology at the University of East London (UEL) is a very high-level research course. It is for students who want to do independent research in psychology. The course is in the School of Childhood and Social Care, where academic staff are available to support students all the way.

Current research at the University is focused on six main areas. These are: how the brain and thinking work (cognition and neuroscience), how people develop (developmental psychology), drugs and addictive behaviours, ways to improve health and behaviour (health promotion), how psychology relates to social changes, and the psychology of education.

The main part of the PhD in Psychology at the University of East is the Independent Research project. PhD students will do their own research and communicate with their supervisor regularly. At UEL, students and staff work on big, important issues that affect the future, showing a strong focus on social issues and critical thinking. To finish the PhD, the student must submit a long research paper, called a thesis, which is about 80,000 words long. After submitting the thesis, the student must complete an oral examination, called a viva, where the student discusses the research with expert examiners.
