PhD Postgraduate Research in Computing Sciences

University of East Anglia UEA

Course overview

The PhD Postgraduate Research in Computing Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is a full-time (or part-time) doctorate programme that typically lasts around three years full-time or up to six years part-time. Students carry out an original research project in the field of computing sciences under the supervision of experienced staff. Research areas include cyber security, data analytics, machine learning, computational biology, and next-generation communication technologies. In this programme, students work closely with a supervisory team to develop a detailed research proposal, carry out experiments or analyses, publish findings, and present conclusions.

Learning in this programme is based around independent research, seminars, meetings with supervisors, and workshops. Students may attend research-group meetings, present work internally and externally, and engage with collaborative projects. Assessment is through the doctoral thesis, publication output, research presentations, and the final oral defence (viva voce). This structure ensures students develop deep specialist knowledge, analytical skills, and research-leadership abilities.
