MSc Nursing Mental Health
Course overview
The MSc Nursing (Mental Health) at the University of Derby is a full-time course for people who already have a degree and want to train to become a Registered Mental Health Nurse. It is an accelerated programme approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and is a direct route to professional registration.
The course teaches how to care for people with mental health needs in a safe, person-centred and professional way. Around half of the course is practice learning, which is required by the NMC. Students complete placements in hospitals, community services, NHS settings, and other mental health organisations across Derbyshire. These placements allow students to learn directly from qualified professionals and develop real clinical skills.
Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, simulation-based learning, skills training sessions, supervised practice in clinical settings, group work and independent study. Assessment methods include written assignments, exams, presentations, reflective work, practical assessments in skills environments, and assessment of performance on placement.
When students complete the MSc Nursing (Mental Health) from the University of Derby, they are eligible to apply for NMC registration and begin work as a Newly Qualified Mental Health Nurse in professional practice.
