Overview
The BA Entrepreneurship and Publishing programme at the University of Derby is a 3-year full-time degree, with an optional placement year for gaining work experience or studying abroad. In the first year, students equally study the two main subjects—entrepreneurship and publishing—to build a solid foundation. After this, they can focus on one topic or continue giving equal attention to both.
Through this course, students are introduced to the publishing process, starting from the author's manuscript to the final product. They examine the roles of editors, publishers, and literary agents in between. Students also study how to solve challenges in the publishing industry, like creating effective strategies for books and magazines. Alongside this, they learn essential business skills related to enterprise and innovation, enabling them to start their own ventures or bring fresh ideas to existing companies.
The programme includes core modules, such as Print and Digital Production, Introduction to Creative Writing and Publishing, Markets and Media, Writing and Publishing Non-fiction, and Finance and Business Performance. Students also learn to use modern technology, like AI and self-publishing tools, and gain knowledge about intellectual property rights and copyright laws.
