BEng Mechanical Engineering

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BEng Mechanical Engineering at the University of Lancashire teaches students how to design, build and test mechanical systems. Students will study materials, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, manufacturing and CAD (computer-aided design). They will also learn how systems work in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, energy and manufacturing. The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and meets its academic requirements.

The programme is offered at UCLan’s Preston Campus. It runs for three years full-time, with an option for a placement year in industry between years two and three. The course uses facilities such as the Engineering Innovation Centre, which offers rapid-prototyping, additive manufacturing, CNC workshops and other modern equipment. Modules include fundamentals of engineering science, design and sustainability, engineering analysis, manufacturing techniques and more advanced topics in later years. Students learn through lectures, labs, workshops and project work.  Assessment involves exams, lab reports, coursework assignments, group projects and a final year project or design portfolio.
