MSc Cyber Security
Course overview
The MSc Cyber Security at the University of Bradford trains students to defend data, systems, and networks from threats. The course covers core ideas, methods, and modern tools used in cyber defence, from encryption and secure system design to risk analysis and ethical hacking. It aims to prepare graduates for professional roles or further research in cyber security. The degree runs for 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time. Students take core modules including Applied Cryptography, ISO27000 Framework (ISMS), Network Security, Business Systems Security, Ethical Hacking, and conclude with a dissertation project. The course mixes theory and practical work, so students learn both academic understanding and hands-on skills useful in real-world situations.
Teaching uses lectures, seminars, case studies, and lab-based work including ethical hacking labs and security simulations. Assessment comes via coursework, practical security tasks, group or individual work, and a final dissertation. The course helps build transferable skills: how to design, implement, and evaluate secure systems; how to think critically about risks; and how to work as part of a team or independently on security challenges. All computing students at Bradford are automatically enrolled as student members of the British Computer Society (BCS), giving access to a professional network and resources. The course is provisionally certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), a plus for students who want credentials valued by employers.
