MSc Bioinformatics

University of Bradford

Course overview

The MSc Bioinformatics at the University of Bradford trains students to combine biology, computer science, maths, and statistics. Students learn how to handle large biological data sets. The course covers genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and other “omics” fields. The programme gives both theory and lab-based practical work so graduates can work in research, health, biotech, or data science. This is a full-time, one-year master’s degree. Core modules include Principles of Bioinformatics, Advanced Bioinformatics, Practical Molecular Biology, ’Omics’ Techniques in Biology and Healthcare, Practical Skills in Research, plus a final Research Project. The course mixes lectures, seminars, lab work, workshops, and self-guided study.

Teaching includes lectures, lab classes, tutorials, data-analysis tasks, and independent work. Assessment comes via unseen exams, coursework (lab reports, essays, data analysis), computer-based assignments, and oral/poster presentations. A full research project completes the degree. Students get support through personal academic tutors. Training is geared towards real-world biology, healthcare, and scientific research needs. The course helps build data handling, molecular biology, and computing skills, useful in labs, biotech, health, or research labs.
