BSc Food and Nutrition

Course Overview

The BSc Food and Nutrition from University College Birmingham provides students with scientific knowledge about food, health, and nutrition, and meets guidelines set by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). Students learn how food impacts health, explore aspects of the food chain, nutrition science, public health, and behavioural issues, such as how people make food choices.

The course includes practical work in UCB’s well-equipped labs, kitchens, and the Food Science and Innovation Suite. Learning is supported by case studies, guest lectures, and placements. Teaching methods include lectures, practical kitchen or lab work, tutorials, and self-study. Assessment is mainly through coursework, with practical assessments and written exams contributing smaller portions.

The timetable is arranged so contact hours may be grouped into 2-3 days per week to help students manage study alongside part-time work. Multiple opportunities for placements or work experience are available throughout the course.

  • Level-3 qualifications totalling 80 UCAS Tariff points (e.g., A-levels CDD, BTEC MMP, or T-level Pass with core component grade C).

English Proficiency

  • IELTS overall score of 6.0, with no section less than 5.5.
  • Equivalent tests, such as TOEFL iBT, are also accepted.

Cost of Study

International students pay a tuition fee of £16,000 per year for the BSc Food and Nutrition programme at University College Birmingham. Fees are subject to annual change.
