MSci Medical Sciences and Population Health with a Foundation Year
Course overview
The MSci Medical Sciences and Population Health with a Foundation Year at Swansea University is an undergraduate course that includes a preparatory year before the main degree. The foundation year covers basic topics like human biology, chemistry, and data handling. Once students pass that year with a 60% average, they move into Year 1 of the MSci programme. The full course builds knowledge in medical science, public health, epidemiology, demography, health data, social determinants of health, and population health. Students will study how medical, social, and environmental factors affect health and learn how to find solutions for health challenges.
This programme is based in the Medical School and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Swansea University and delivered on campus. The MSci route is longer and includes a year of research at master’s level. Students start with foundational modules, then move on to core and optional modules across medical science and population health. They also engage in laboratory work, field projects, and research talks. The integrated research year lets students work on an independent project, often linked with the university’s research centres or health organisations. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, laboratory classes, group work, and independent study. Assessment is through lab reports, written exams, oral presentations, essays, project reports, and assessments of clinical skills.
