The nature of the work and the time it takes to finish the research mean the research degree is demanding and requires great commitment.

Your research will take place in the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC). The BMRC has been established for over 15 years and has over 40 postgraduate students, creating a stimulating research environment. While studying, postgraduate students are encouraged to present their latest findings at national and international conferences.

You will become trained in research methods and complete a high-level research project. You can undertake research in disease mechanisms, bioanalytical chemistry, molecular microbiology, or chemistry and biomaterials. Your research will be presented in a thesis, and you will have to explain your methods and defend them in a viva voce examination.

The Biomolecular Sciences Laboratories are highly specialised and well-equipped with a variety of specialist equipment. Depending on your project, you will work with tools such as the biacore facility, cell culture facilities for bacteria and mammalian cells, a confocal and inverted fluorescence microscopy suite, and a host of others.
