Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

This Master of Research (MRes) in Chemistry lets students choose from a wide range of advanced modules to fit their personal goals and future career plans. A main part of the course is a major research project that lasts between 10 and 12 months. If students work in the industry, this project may be done as approved 'in-house' research. The course can be completed full-time in one year or part-time in two years at the Clifton Campus.

The course has been officially approved by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which confirms it meets the professional quality standards needed for industry jobs. Lessons are given by subject specialists and involve lab sessions, so students get practical experience using modern equipment in the university's excellent facilities. Students are graded through different tasks, such as a research project report, written exams, coursework, and presentations.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. An academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience and additional professional background.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need at least a second-class honours undergraduate degree (2.2) in a chemistry-related subject, such as Forensic Science, Pharmacology, or Pharmacy.
  • Alternatively, a different degree will be acceptable if the student has enough relevant employment experience in a field related to chemistry or laboratory work, and those with relevant professional qualifications will also be considered.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score at least 6.5 overall in the IELTS Academic test, with a minimum of 5.5 in each of the individual components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
  • The university also accepts equivalent English language test scores, such as PTE, where candidates need a score of 62, with no less than 59 in any part.
