BSc Software Engineering with foundation year
Course overview
The BSc Software Engineering (with foundation year) at Nottingham Trent University gives students the chance to build a strong base and then study software engineering in depth. The foundation year covers basics like introductory mathematics, foundation engineering, practical and professional skills, and introductory programming. After that, students move into the main degree where they learn software design, development, security, systems, and project work. The course prepares students to design and build real software systems and work in technology fields. This is a four-year full-time programme. The first (foundation) year prepares students who do not yet meet normal entry criteria.
After the foundation year, students enter the BSc honours route. In later years, they study core software engineering modules like Software Design and Implementation, Information and Database Engineering, and Systems Software. Optional modules include Information Security, Cloud Computing, or Distributed Database Engineering. The course content is reviewed regularly to stay up-to-date with industry needs. Teaching is delivered through lectures, lab sessions, workshops, tutorials, and project work. Assessments include exams, coursework, lab reports, design tasks, and the final major project. The project usually occupies a large credit load in the final year and allows students to show their skills and creativity.
