BSc Engineering Product Design with Foundation Year
Course overview
The five-year BSc (Hons) Engineering Product Design (with Foundation Year) begins with a foundation year that builds essential academic, laboratory, engineering science, and mathematical skills to prepare students for Level 4 study. In the subsequent levels, students learn to analyse design problems, explore alternatives, and prototype solutions using digital manufacturing technologies, progressing from concept to a final artefact in a substantial final-year project.
Assessment methods vary by module; while some combine coursework and exams, others are 100% coursework. Students are evaluated through individual and group presentations, critiques, and detailed feedback. Learning takes place in modern workshops, laboratories, design studios, and virtual engineering suites equipped with laser cutters, CNC machines, 3D printers, robotics labs, and material-testing facilities.
Entry requirements
Applicants must provide a personal statement outlining their reasons for applying, along with relevant academic information. A reference from an academic tutor or employer is required, and students may also upload a CV to showcase their work experience.
Grade Requirements:
- Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English.
- UCAS Tariff points of 64 (A-level DD, BTEC National Diploma MPP, or Access to HE with Pass).
English Proficiency:
- IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no section below 5.5.
- Equivalent tests such as TOEFL, Pearson PTE, or BrunELT are accepted.
