BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy

The BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy at Edge Hill University gives you the chance to develop the personal and professional skills needed to support others through emotional challenges. You will learn about the theory and ethics behind counselling, and get real experience working with clients.

You will study humanistic psychology and see how therapy can help people understand difficult life experiences and painful feelings. As part of the course, you will also take part in placements, where you will practise counselling with real clients. A trained supervisor will guide and support you during this time.

To support your personal development, you will receive financial help for your own therapy and clinical supervision while studying. The course also looks at international views on mental health, encouraging you to consider how culture, politics, and global issues shape emotional wellbeing.

Edge Hill University began in 1885 in Liverpool as the first non-denominational teacher training college for women. Later, it moved to its current Ormskirk campus in Lancashire. It was officially named a university in 2006.

Noteworthy facilities include the Catalyst building (a study hub), the Tech Hub with immersive 3D tech, a brand-new Students’ Union, and advanced labs for a range of subjects. Edge Hill combines high-quality teaching with strong academic research. Over half of its research was judged “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” in the REF 2021.

• Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge of humanistic counselling and psychotherapy and the capacity to be reflective and emotionally available.

Grade Requirements:

• To study this course, a UCAA tariff score of 104-112 is required. This can be achieved through qualifications such as A-Level (BCC-BBC), BTEC Extended Diploma (DMM), T-Level (Merit), and Access to HE Diploma (45 credits). 

English Proficiency: 

• International students require an IELTS score of 6.0, with a score no lower than 5.5 in each component, or an equivalent English language qualification.

For the 2025/2026 academic entry, the tuition fee to study the BSc Counselling and Psychotherapy at Edge Hill University is £17,000. Please note that tuition fees may increase as you progress through the course. 

Edge Hill University has a range of scholarships for international students. All full-time, overseas fee-paying students will be automatically considered for the award of a scholarship when applying for a programme of studies. The Undergraduate Development Scholarship is one such scholarship for students starting an undergraduate degree. This is worth up to £3,000 towards the first year's tuition fees.
