About University

Edge Hill University started in 1885 as Edge Hill College. It was the first teacher training college in England that was not linked to any religion and was only for women. It was first based in the Edge Hill area of Liverpool, but later moved to its main campus in Ormskirk, where it is today.

Over the years, the institution has developed significantly. It started admitting male students in 1959 and expanded its course offerings beyond teacher training. In 1989, it became an independent Higher Education Corporation, and in 2006, it was officially granted full university status and became Edge Hill University. This history means it has a long-standing reputation for high-quality teacher education.

Edge Hill University is committed to delivering high-quality teaching and career-ready graduates. Its academic structure is divided into three main Faculties: Faculty of Education; Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine; and Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
