MSc Psychology of Coercive Control

Course Overview

The University of Salford’s MSc Psychology of Coercive Control programme takes the study of emotions, personality, and mental health to a different level. The degree teaches how coercive control develops and affects individuals and groups. The course looks at important issues such as human trafficking, cyberbullying, cults, and domestic violence. Students will study the psychological methods used to manipulate and control people, as well as how victims can recover.

In this course, learning is achieved through lectures, seminars, tutorials, video presentations, and guest speakers. Assessment methods include essays, case studies, oral presentations, and a research dissertation.

Entry Requirements

For applicants who don't meet the standard entry requirements but can show they have the potential to succeed on the course, there are two alternative routes through the Salford Alternative Entry Scheme. 

Grade Requirements

  • A 2:1 Honours degree (or its equivalent) in Psychology is required. Qualifications in other relevant fields such as Counselling, Health Sciences, Nursing, Criminal Justice, Law, and Political Science might also be acceptable.

English Proficiency

  • Candidates whose first language isn’t English must showcase fluency in the language. This is often provided through an IELTS score of 7.0 with no component below 6.5.

Cost of Study

For the 2025/26 academic year, the annual tuition fee for international students enrolling in the MSc Psychology of Coercive Control is £17,000.
