BSc Operating Department Practice

Course Overview

The Buckinghamshire New University Operating Department Practice programme prepares students to become skilled healthcare professionals working in operating theatres. The course covers the three main phases of a patient's surgical journey: anaesthetic, surgical, and recovery. Students learn to provide high-quality, patient-centred care, ensuring patient safety and well-being throughout surgical procedures.

The programme combines academic study with significant practical experience, with 50% of the course spent on placement in hospital operating departments. Students will learn through lectures, seminars, practical sessions in simulation suites, and supervised practice in hospitals.

Students’ progress is assessed through different methods, including written assignments, presentations, practical assessments, and examinations. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), allowing them to practice in the UK.
