BEng Biomedical Engineering with Foundation Year

The BEng (Hons) Biomedical Engineering with Foundation Year at Canterbury Christ Church University is designed for students who want to pursue careers in medical sciences or related fields but do not meet direct entry requirements. The foundation year equips students with essential skills in mathematics, programming, applied science, and engineering, preparing them for the engineering course and the full degree with confidence.

The course covers smart medical devices, biomechanics, electromechanical systems, human anatomy, robotics, and sustainability, while also focusing on medical regulations and environmental issues. It trains students to develop advanced prosthetics, diagnostic equipment, or artificial organs. It encourages creative problem-solving and produces work-ready engineers.

Learning is through lectures, workshops, laboratory practicals, and seminars, while assessment methods include coursework, lab reports, literature reviews, presentations, and a final year major project. The course is guided by the Engineering Council and regulated by the CDIO (conceive, design, implement, operate) approach, which was developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) is a public research university located in Canterbury, Kent, England. The university was founded as a Church of England college for teacher training in 1962 and gained university status in 2005. It has a student population of approximately 22,000.

Applicants are required to submit a personal statement, which should contain their reasons for applying to the course and any academic or professional experience. A reference from an academic or employer is required. Students can also upload a CV to show their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

• Applicants generally require an EEE or BBC at  A-Level (EEE if you’ve studied Maths, Science, Physics, Engineering; BBC if not).
• Relevant equivalents such as BTEC - PPP or DMM (PPP if you’ve studied Maths, Science, Physics, Engineering, DMM if not) and Access to HE Diplomas (Pass 45 Credits) are considered.

English Proficiency:

• Applicants who do not speak English as their first language need an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5.

The tuition fee for this course with Foundation Year at Canterbury Christ Church University is £15,500 for the 2025/26 academic year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may change.
