Life in the USA

The F-1 Student Visa is the main visa used by international students studying full-time in the USA. Your F-1 status normally lasts for the length of your approved study programme.

While your course is in session, you can work up to 20 hours a week on campus. You can work full-time on campus during official school breaks. Off-campus work has different rules and normally requires specific authorisation.

After completing your studies, you may be able to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This can give you up to 12 months of work authorisation in a job related to your field of study. And if you have a qualifying STEM degree, you may be eligible for a further 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to 36 months in total.

F-1 Student Visa Key Facts

  • Duration: It covers the period you need to complete your approved programme and is subject to maintaining your student status.
  • Work rights: You can work up to 20 hours a week on campus while school is in session, and full-time on-campus during official school breaks.
  • Off-campus work: You can't simply take any off-campus job. Work outside campus usually needs the correct authorisation, such as CPT or OPT, and must meet the relevant requirements. You can speak with an expert at AHZ for guidance.
  • After graduation: Eligible students may apply for post-completion OPT for up to 12 months. Qualifying STEM graduates may be able to extend this by another 24 months.
