Course Overview

The BSc Nursing - Child at Birmingham City University is designed to develop interested students into highly skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate graduate nurses. The students will learn to lead and coordinate compassionate care within interdisciplinary healthcare teams, preparing them for a professional career in child nursing.

The course covers important learning areas, including evidence-based, child- and family-centred care, professional values, communication, team coordination, leadership, safe medication administration, and self-leadership specific to paediatric settings. The curriculum focuses on the unique health needs of children and young people.

The teaching methods include lectures, seminars, group work, skills labs, simulation and virtual learning; assessment is via coursework, exams and in‑practical assessments over five modules per year. Practical elements include half of each year spent on placement in hospitals, community and home settings, leading to eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) upon successful completion.

Entry Requirements

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically require a BBB at A-Levels (120 UCAS Tariff points) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Additionally, applicants must hold GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Mathematics at grade C/4 or above.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants who do not speak English as their first language need an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each category.
  • Alternatively, a Secure English Language Test (SELT) may be required for those wishing to undertake pre-sessional English courses before starting the PhD programme.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for the full-time BSc Nursing - Child programme starting in January 2026 is £17,690 per year for international students for the 2025/26 academic year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may change.
