BSc Forensic Science with Foundation Year

Wrexham University

Course overview

The BSc Forensic Science (with Foundation Year) at Wrexham University helps students learn about crime scene work, lab tests, evidence, and how to explain findings in court. The first year teaches basic science, lab work, maths, and how crime scenes are processed, while in later years, students study forensic biology, chemistry, toxicology, trace evidence, and legal rules. There is a chance for a placement or an industry project to gain real work experience. In the final year, students carry out a research project. The programme uses real case studies, mock crime scenes, lab work, and lectures by forensic experts.

In year 1 (foundation), students build science skills in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and lab safety. They learn how science supports forensic work. After the foundation year, they join the regular forensic science degree. Over three years, students will learn modules such as crime scene investigation, forensic analysis, evidence handling, quality control, and legal procedures. Students are taught using lectures, lab sessions, workshops, seminars, field exercises, and guest talks by practitioners. Assessments are through written exams, lab reports, essays, group projects, presentations, and a final research dissertation or project.
