University of Sussex

Course overview

This three-year undergraduate BSc in Biology sets students up to understand new scientific discoveries, developing essential skills in critical thinking, scientific teamwork, and technical communication. From the first year, students gain practical experience in both laboratories and in the field, including exciting field trips to places such as the South Downs National Park and destinations abroad. Students have the opportunity to focus on areas like cell and molecular biology, evolution and ecology, or neuroscience and behaviour.

Learning is informed by staff expertise in research that addresses society's biggest issues, such as cancer treatment and declining bee populations. In their final year, students may join a lecturer's research lab to conduct their own research project. Graduates acquire experience in running experiments, statistical data analysis, and concluding evidence, preparing them for jobs in science or fields like the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare, and sustainability.
