BEng Chemical Engineering with foundation year and placement

The BEng Chemical Engineering with Placement Year at the University of Surrey will introduce students to a range of common material properties and outline major classes of material. The Sustainability element provides an introduction to the fundamentals of sustainability and its engineering applications.  

On placement, students will gain invaluable first-hand experience of how the industry operates and apply their theoretical knowledge in practice. Many of our students take the Professional Training placement, which can give them a head start in their future careers. 

Students are assessed individually and awarded credits for the successful completion of each one. Assessment is based on a combination of coursework, essays, examinations, presentations, and reports.

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement discussing their reasons for applying to the BEng Chemical Engineering with placement course and provide other relevant information about their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements: 

• Applicants are also expected to have qualifications equivalent to A-levels at  ABB-BBB in a science subject. Other qualifications include International Baccalaureate and GCSE or equivalent.  

English Proficiency: 

• Applicants from non-English-speaking backgrounds need an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, or an equivalent recognised English language test score, such as TOEFL or PTE.

For international students, the tuition fee for the BEng Chemical Engineering with Placement in the University of Surrey is £27,000 and an extra £1,900 for the placement year.

The University of Surrey provides various scholarships and bursaries to help eligible postgraduate students. These include a £2,000 early payment discount for international students who fund their studies. Also, some international students starting a master's degree in September 2025 might qualify for the International Excellence Award, which offers a £5,000 fee reduction.
