BSc Sport and Exercise Science
Course overview
The BSc Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Surrey teaches how the body works in sport and how exercise affects health. Students learn how to improve performance, prevent injury, and promote well-being. The course mixes science, practice, and research. The degree is recognised by BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences).
In the first year, students study anatomy, biochemistry, fitness and health, physiology, movement science, and how to build skills. In the second year, they apply knowledge in sports contexts, learning about biomechanics, sports nutrition, psychology, and performance testing. In the third year, students can choose optional modules such as human movement, rehabilitation, or biological rhythms. They also carry out a research project, combining all their skills.
The course is taught at Surrey’s Stag Hill campus using excellent facilities, including sports labs, testing suites, and performance equipment. Optional certifications, such as gym instructor and personal training, are included without extra cost. Students are taught using lectures, lab practicals, workshops, tutorials, and fieldwork. They use modern facilities like Surrey Sports Park to do experiments and tests in biomechanics, physiology, and performance. Assessments include written exams, lab reports, presentations, coursework, and the final research project.
